Short answer

Lower-scale landscape work where the selected timber product, treatment, detailing and expected service life match the property objective and site exposure.

What timber retaining walls cost

Planning band: A$300 to A$520 per m² of wall face. A 10 m wall retaining 1.0 m with good access lands around A$3,800 to A$7,800 installed before removal or professional work.

Bands are the calculator's national planning coefficients, version rwq-au-2026-09-01-preliminary, GST inclusive, before any site inspection. They are not quotes and not a structural sizing rule.

Where this system may be a poor fit

A brief that treats all timber as equivalent, exposes cut ends or connections without a durability strategy, or chooses low entry cost without considering future access and replacement.

What moves the installed cost

  • Timber species or product, hazard treatment and dimensions.
  • Posts, footings, fixings, cut treatment and cap details.
  • Ground contact, moisture exposure, drainage and termite context.
  • Removal and disposal of an existing timber wall.

What the quote should specify

  • Exact timber product, grade, treatment and intended use class.
  • Post, fixing and connection materials.
  • Treatment of cuts, penetrations and damaged surfaces.
  • Drainage, backfill, warranty and maintenance instructions.

Maintenance and future work

Inspect for decay, splitting, insect damage, loose connections, movement and persistent wetting. Keep drainage functioning and record any local deterioration before it spreads into a more difficult replacement scope.

Common questions

Are timber retaining walls the cheapest option?

On the wall-system line the planning band is A$300 to A$520 per m² of wall face, against timber at A$300 to A$520 and natural stone at A$650 to A$1,100. There is no dependable national ranking of installed cost. Design, access, excavation, drainage, labour, freight, professional work and maintenance can change the complete figure.

Can timber retaining walls be quoted per metre?

Use wall-face area and a complete installed scope. A lineal rate without height, access, drainage, excavation and professional assumptions is not comparable.
