Short answer

Projects where reinforced concrete, custom geometry and a continuous wall form suit the structural design, finish, access and construction sequence.

What cast-in-situ concrete retaining walls cost

Planning band: no national planning rate; project-specific design and pricing. Reinforced concrete walls are priced from the structural design, formwork and placement method rather than a national rate.

Bands are the calculator's national planning coefficients, version rwq-au-2026-09-01-preliminary, GST inclusive, before any site inspection. They are not quotes and not a structural sizing rule.

Where this system may be a poor fit

A small or access-constrained project where formwork, reinforcement, concrete delivery and curing cannot be planned efficiently, or a quote that treats concrete volume as the complete wall system.

What moves the installed cost

  • Engineering, reinforcement schedule, footing and wall geometry.
  • Formwork type, finish class, curves, steps, corners and joints.
  • Concrete specification, pump or truck access, placement and curing.
  • Excavation, drainage, backfill, waterproofing where specified and spoil removal.

What the quote should specify

  • Structural drawings, design basis and reinforcement schedule where required.
  • Concrete strength and exposure specification, wall thickness and footing details.
  • Formwork finish, joints, penetrations, tolerances and curing method.
  • Drainage, backfill, waterproofing where designed and access assumptions.

Maintenance and future work

Inspect cracking, joints, drainage outlets, surface spalling, staining and movement. Keep the design and concrete records because future assessment depends on the specified reinforcement, exposure, joints and drainage—not appearance alone. Permanent formwork systems such as Dincel are a distinct construction method and should be named in the design and quote rather than grouped under ‘moulded concrete’.

Common questions

Are cast-in-situ concrete retaining walls the cheapest option?

There is no dependable national ranking of installed cost. Design, access, excavation, drainage, labour, freight, professional work and maintenance can change the complete figure.

Can cast-in-situ concrete retaining walls be quoted per metre?

Use wall-face area and a complete installed scope. A lineal rate without height, access, drainage, excavation and professional assumptions is not comparable.
