Quote comparison method

Compare retaining wall quotes without being misled by the total

The cheapest total can hide the largest unpriced risk. Compare the design basis, construction scope and exclusions before deciding which price is actually lower.

Short answer

Build one comparison sheet with the same rows for every proposal. Mark each item included, excluded, provisional or unclear, then ask written questions before accepting a price.

Start with scope alignment

Put the quotes beside the same project brief. If the proposed wall systems or dimensions differ, compare the reasons as well as the price. A lower figure based on less excavation, fewer drainage items or no professional allowance is not the same offer.

  • Check whether measurements and retained height match.
  • Check whether demolition and spoil leave the site.
  • Check whether drainage reaches a lawful outlet rather than stopping behind the wall.
  • Check who supplies designs, certification and authority applications.

Separate fixed, provisional and excluded work

A provisional sum can be reasonable where ground conditions are unknown, but it needs a unit, assumption or method for adjustment. An unexplained exclusion transfers a cost without showing its likely size.

StatusMeaningQuestion to ask
IncludedPriced inside the totalWhat exact materials, quantities and labour are included?
ProvisionalAllowed at an estimateWhat assumption and adjustment method apply?
ExcludedYou organise or pay separatelyWho must complete it and before what stage?
UnclearNot addressedPlease confirm in writing before acceptance.

Compare commercial risk

Review payment stages, start windows, weather delays, access obligations, variation approval, clean-up, defects, warranty wording and insurance evidence. A clear contract and a slightly higher total can carry less homeowner risk than a vague low price.

What to record before seeking quotes

  • Dimensions
Length, average retained height and how the dimensions were measured.
  • Earthworks
Excavation, spoil quantity, disposal, temporary support and site protection.
  • Drainage
Aggregate, geotextile, pipe, outlets and stormwater connections stated separately.
  • Professional scope
Engineering, geotechnical input, certification and approvals included or clearly excluded.
  • Commercial scope
GST, payment stages, variations, programme, warranty and exclusions.

Common questions

How many retaining wall quotes should I get?

There is no magic number. Seek enough suitable proposals to understand the scope and market, then spend more effort making them comparable than chasing a large count.

Is the lowest retaining wall quote usually best?

Not necessarily. It may omit drainage, disposal, design, approvals, GST or difficult access. Compare the documented scope and risk allocation before the total.
