Ask early where consequences or uncertainty are material. The relevant authority, certifier and suitably qualified engineer establish the property-specific requirement and design pathway.
Conditions worth escalating early
- Greater retained height or stepped and tiered arrangements.
- Buildings, driveways, pools, roads, services or steep slopes near the wall.
- Boundary constraints or consequences for neighbouring property.
- Uncertain soil, groundwater, erosion or changed drainage.
- Movement, failure, replacement or alteration of an existing wall.
- A proprietary system outside its documented scope or unusual geometry.
What to bring to the first conversation
Provide dimensions, levels where available, property and boundary information, photographs, access constraints, nearby loads, visible water and the intended wall system. Better inputs reduce avoidable assumptions but do not replace investigation where it is required.
What an engineering scope may contain
Confirm the design deliverables, required survey or geotechnical inputs, assumptions, drawings and calculations, construction inspections, revisions, certification language and who responds to site changes. A plan-only fee and a complete construction-support scope are not directly comparable.
This page identifies questions only. It does not assess a wall, select structural sizes or determine whether engineering is legally required.
